Coach Count on Key Trains Increased from 15 to 19 as Demand Surges

Pakistan Railways has increased the number of coaches on its key trains from 15 to 19, adding significant seating capacity on the busiest routes in the country. The move, confirmed by railway officials in 2026, is a direct response to record passenger demand that has left popular trains fully booked days in advance.

Four additional coaches per train may sound incremental, but across daily departures on major corridors like Karachi–Lahore, Lahore–Rawalpindi, and Karachi–Peshawar, the change adds thousands of extra seats every single day.

Ten New Trains in Recent Months

The capacity boost comes alongside the launch of 10 new passenger trains in recent months — part of the railway’s broader 2026 expansion drive. Together, longer consists and new services are intended to reduce overcrowding, shorten waiting lists, and win back travellers who had shifted to buses and airlines.

Railway workshops in Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Karachi have been rehabilitating stored and damaged coaches to make the longer trains possible, returning rolling stock to service that had been sidelined for years due to maintenance backlogs.

Which Trains Benefit

The additional coaches are being prioritised for high-demand express services — the trains that consistently run at or near full occupancy. Passengers on these routes should notice more available berths in AC Business, AC Standard, and Economy classes, particularly during peak travel periods such as Eid and the summer holidays.

Officials say the mix of added coaches is being tuned to demand on each route: some trains are gaining economy coaches to serve budget travellers, while others are receiving air-conditioned stock where premium demand is strongest.

Booking and Tracking Tips

Even with the added capacity, early booking remains the safest bet on top routes — advance reservations open up to 30 days before departure through the official website and app.

And once you are booked, remember that you can track any Pakistan Railways train live on TrainTracking.pk to check its real-time position and expected arrival time before heading to the station.
