Pakistan’s busiest railway stations are getting long-overdue modern amenities. Escalators have been installed at key stations in Karachi and Lahore, while information desks and free Wi-Fi are being rolled out at the stations that together handle roughly 80% of the network’s passenger traffic.
The upgrades target the pain points passengers encounter before they ever board a train: climbing footbridges with heavy luggage, hunting for accurate platform and delay information, and having no connectivity while waiting.
Escalators at Major Stations
The escalator installations at Karachi Cantt and Lahore Junction — among the busiest stations in the country — make platform access dramatically easier for elderly passengers, families with children, and travellers with heavy baggage. Station footbridges, previously accessible only by stairs, have been a barrier for many passengers for decades.
Additional installations are planned at other high-traffic stations as the programme expands, prioritised by daily passenger volumes.
Information Desks and Free Wi-Fi
Dedicated information desks are being staffed at major stations to give passengers reliable answers on schedules, platforms, delays, and bookings — replacing the informal word-of-mouth system travellers have relied on. Free public Wi-Fi is going live at the same stations, keeping passengers connected while they wait and enabling them to check bookings, tickets, and live train status on their phones.
Because the selected stations account for about 80% of all passenger traffic, the programme delivers maximum passenger benefit per rupee spent, even though it covers a minority of the network’s hundreds of stations.
Part of a Wider Modernisation
The station upgrades complement onboard improvements — modern dining cars, refurbished coaches, and LED entertainment screens — rolling out across major trains in 2026, forming an end-to-end upgrade of the travel experience.
